STREAMS – Grace Stoner
Installazione audio-video interattiva, 2020
Streams is an interactive audio-video installation created for the exhibition Stoner. Landing Pages, inspired by the novel Stoner by John Williams. Streams tells the story of Grace, the daughter of Stoner and Edith, through memories of a childhood and adolescence lived in the shadow of her parents and their conflict, their distance, and their inability to communicate. Stoner and Edith are, in fact, the central figures—haunting presences, obsessively both present and absent: present through words, sounds, and everyday objects; absent through their bodies.
“For perhaps then I did not even know how much I wanted, how much I needed to escape from here.” — Grace
The central column within the space, from which the video is viewed, represents Grace; the two sound sources behind it symbolize her parents: Edith on the left, Stoner on the right. Standing in front of Grace, one can observe in the video the overlapping memories of both parents. Moving to the left of Grace, images relating to Edith become predominant; to the right of Grace, conversely, images relating to Stoner emerge.
